Building a salt flat racer
Building a salt flat racer

Ok guys & girls,  I am about to embark on the construction process of a salt flat racer for the International 36 Horse power challenge.

My goal is to be ready for a run down the salt in 2012.

I will post all the build pics i can and leave it open for everybody for have a look at and comment on.

i do need to get some answers to questions, and i am sure as i go through this build my list of questions will only get longer.

Already i have got some great support from a couple of great mates and i just wanna acknowledge there input right up front.  Aaron for his building skills / Mick for his knowledge and skills / Keith for being a great sounding board.

I am also going to be on the look out for some bits from time to time so i will post here for those as well.

I am looking at the open class as we will be turbocharging the motor as the goal is to break the 100mph mark and with a fat bugger like me in the car, I'm going to need a turbo : )

i am a little confused by the rules as i cant find much in the way of clarity, also i seems that the Australian guys seem to have more stringent rules when it comes to the cars.

so the first couple of questions i'll put out into the universe for answers are:

1. Can the car have a fiber glass front ?

2. can i raise the the engin and gear box to help get the car lower ?

3. can i narrow the rear end ?

4. dose the car have to be 6volt ?

5. are four wheel disc breaks ok ?

6. what original parts must be maintained in the engine build to comply with the rules?

7. do i need to run a full interior or can i strip it out like a race car

well that's a good start, i have others but i'll save those  : )

Ok i'll have the first pics soon.

Cheers,

Finn

Ok, i'm looking for a late type 3 gear box, from a 73 model ... i want the 3.88 ratios for the salt flats, so if anybody's got one ... i'd like to hear from you.

My good friend Aaron has been busy this week end ....

The case work as of right now:

case is drilled and tapped for full flow with a -6 to 1/4 NPT fitting

case main gallery drilled and tapped front and rear for 1/4 NPT plugs

oil pump outlet in case drilled and tapped for 1/4 NPT plug

gallery above oil pressure switch drilled and tapped for 1/4 NPT plug

ground / machined an oil return into the case at the No.1 main bearing (to assist in reducing oil leaks).

Next on the agenda, I will see if I can get some 10mm case savers installed.  aaron will also make a blanking plate for the fuel pump area once he has some aluminium sheet about 3-5mm thick.

i am thinking about straight cut gears... would be nice to have a tuff sounding 36hp
