just a quick one.

i went to visit a vw friend yesterday, just to say hi as i hadn't seen him for a while. while there he asked me if i wanted a metal oil tin that he had (he has given me a few over the years). where he had them stored i saw a couple of old oil refill bottles and told him that he should look after them as they are rather collectable... his imediate reply was "i still use this one but do you want this one? oh and this?" grabbing another... then the top for a 3rd. after the usual "are you sure?" repeated a few times i now have a nice late 60's (i think) castrol metal toped 1 imp pint jar plus an 80's plastic top (castrol?).

i love the guy for it, but it spun me out that as soon as i told him to look after them he offered them to me. i shouldn't complain, just make sure that i do everything i can when i can.

it gets me on to a new topic, collecting. now i have several castrol 30W oil tins and an oil filler bottle of the same vintage (it says lightweight super oil or similar) maybe it would be nice to have a few more... the problem being the obvious, i don't need more shit, especially when collecting oil company stuff is a full on hobby for many people. i figured that while i would like a few more bits and bobs (aka a carry rack thingy of oil bottles and a few more oil cans) i should really cut this down so it doesn't get in the way (too much) of vw's. my first thought was to only collect 30W motor oil and 70W gear oil as they are what VW's used (from memory) EDIT. it is SAE 30, SAE20/20W in cold climates (like armidale in winter) and SAE 90 gear oil...    this morning i though cutting it down further to just 30W and 70W (SAE 30 and SAE 90) oil stuff from castrol with the style logo that i already have would a) make it a smallish diversion from vw's and b) not stupidly expensive as it is a later and fairly common logo. as to if i follow this, we will find out as time passes. to be honest i only really want a small amount of stuff full stop (at least some of it will be used, i think that the oil filler bottles would be good for getting into the beetle filler thingy).

the one problem i have with all of this is that i want it for my shed when it is done and under control. the problematic part of it is that it is for decoration and when it comes down to it i'm not into the whole cleche themed garage thing... i guess that i will have to work out my issues with this when it comes time to get my shed lined etc... so i should have a bit of time yet :)

i know this is rather dull without pics but you will have to suffer a while longer.
