At 16, my first car was nearly a Beetle, but I ended up with a mini instead.
My first VW was a 1973 Westphalia. It was a low miles (I was living in the UK back then) one owner, full history, bus that me and my mate bought between us for 1300 GBP. Our plan was to travel round Europe in it. This was back in '92, I was about 21.
It was a two tone white over green walk-through, with a yellowy-beige plaid interior. All original, with a full width rock-n-roll bed in the back and a full width bed up in the pop-top, it was great. Me and may mate spent about a year traveling around West Europe in it, from Holland, through Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, down through France, into Spain and Portugal. It was an awesome road trip, and one that I will never forget.
Unfortunately I don't have any pics, of either the bus or the trip. I long ago lost touch with the guy I traveled with.
I learned a lot about living in a bus from that trip, mostly that the cupboards, sink, coolbox / fridge, stove etc, all take up LOTS of room. When there are two of you stuck in a bus, as it has rained solid for a week and you can't venture outside, you would prefer the extra space over a cupboard full of stuff. In a year of traveling, we never unpacked that cupboard once.
Maybe I should see if I can track down some pics. Wow, would love to see pics of that trip and me nearly 20 years back. What a blast.
